Interesting tournament report.
Of course the Scandinavian works at 1900, Anand even played it in a world championship match.

I also like your 1 a3 approach to white like Adolf Anderssen used to play.
That almost doubles the number of Scandinavian Defenses you get to play.
You only need a good way to handle 1 a3 d5.

well e4 still is, and likely always will be my main weapon, I played a3 only to avoid the french. And yeah, almost is accurate, as it's more common to face 1. e4 with Black than 1. a3 e5 with White

I wish that would be the only problem. Against d5 c5 we can get a getter verion of the Benko/Benoni, but the problem is, that 1. a3 isn't challenging at all by itself, so it allows Black to play something like 1... Nf6 or 1... g6, where we basically switch colors with little to no benefit.
But if I find an interesting idea against those (maybe b4 Bb2, but that runs to a5) 1. a3 might me a legit second weapon

Why are you so afraid of the French ?
There are many interesting and challenging ways to meet it

Not that I'm afraid, it's more that I don't understand it. I'm bad woth strategical games, and I don't like closed positions

Please share as many as you know, I've been looking for weeks, or even months now, but nothing I found felt quite right... and if you can, go a little in depth on those challenging ways

The 2 modern treatments of the Milner-Barry Gambit are altogether ambitious, complex, fully sound and fertile ground for personal research

Of course 3 Nc3 is also very enterprising and within the Classical 3...Nf6 both 4 e5 and 4 Bg5 remain critical
The Tarrasch 3 Nd2 is certainly a decent practical choice as well
And then you have some sidelines which are well worth considering, chief among these the KIA d3
