What to do if none of your calculated moves work out?

Today's game was more educational than rewarding. Such games are particularly good for your improvement. After all, if you always won, how would you improve?

My (stronger) opponent adopted a Scheveningen formation against the Smith–Morra Gambit, which then changed to a Najdorf formation. At the critical moment, I calculated several opportunities – but none of them seemed to bring about any immediate success.

Should I have played one of them and see if it works – or just slowly improve my position until a workable opportunity turned up? What would be your strategy? See the game – and you can also see more of my Smith–Morra Games:
