Child prodigy and Bobby Fischer rival - Samuel Reshevsky

ChessAnalysisTacticsStrategyChess Personalities
Reshevsky was playing simultaneous displays against adults when only a small child!

Hi all

Samuel Reshevsky has one of the most fascinating historical chess photos that Wiki has, which is shown in this blog thumbnail. Wiki also identifies the picture as:

"One of the finest images on the English Wikipedia, adding significantly to its accompanying article"

With such a picture, one must ask - surely this kid goes on to become World chess champion later or was at least a strong grandmaster. Yes, Reshevsky was a strong grandmaster as an adult and even defeated Capablanca:

Capablanca's c4 move was quite committal and d5 needs the support of pieces and is of greater importance as it helps secure c4:

d5 pressure later:

Key takeaway points

  • Reshevsky was an amazing child prodigy
  • As an adult, Reshevsky was a strong grandmaster and even beat some of the World chess champions such as Capablanca
  • d5 was shown quite resourcefully to be a weak pawn in this positional struggle
  • There was a fierce rivalry between Samuel Reshesvky and Bobby Fischer
