This is the basic pawn skeleton of the IQP structure. The isolated queen pawn is one of the essential pawn structures to master since it can occur in both e4 and d4 openings. The d-pawn can't be defended by another pawn so it is by definition a weakness. Also, the square in front of the pawn can often be an outpost since the IQP player has no pawns to control that square.

There are benefits though to the IQP:
1. More space.
2. More control of the center.
3. The open e- and c-files.

The purpose of this study will be to demonstrate how the IQP player can maximize the dynamic potential these positions.
