studies: what is the difference between a member and a contributor?

from the settings of a study you are given the option to separate privileges between members and contributors

if i click "add a member" i suppose a members gets added, what is a contributor then?

A contributor may edit the study just like you can. A member may discuss (and for private studies, observe) the study.
