Lichess Stream Setup Checklist

When a streamer is going to stream from the official Lichess YouTube or Twitch account there is some work to be done to make sure its ready for them.

  • Make sure the streamer has the stream key to put in their broadcasting software. If using the restreamer, the key can be found there. If using twitch or YouTube the stream key can be found there.
  • Make the streamer a mod on the Lichess channel so they can police their own stream if nobody else is available.
  • Setup the Twitch title and "go live" message if using twitch. Setup a stream ahead of time with an appropriate title/description if using YouTube.
  • Setup the restreamer if using it. Turn on the appropriate channels and makes sure the streamers channel is added if they intend to self-raid. If using YouTube, make sure it is "aimed" at the previously created stream.
  • Setup a Lichess event (AKA "BBB") if appropriate. Generally events are only used after discussion with the team.
  • Send a PM-all from the Lichess production team with the Curator account. This should be done close to the time of the stream
  • Setup appropriate Nightbot commands. The important ones are usually !streamer which identifies the streamer and promotes their channel and !challenge which gives challenge instructions for "Lichess Plays" streams. There is a seperate Nightbot for Youtube and Twitch. Twitch mods can edit nightbot commands directly in the twitch chat by using:
!editcom [COMMAND] [OUTPUT]

During the stream

  • There is no requirement to moderate a stream that you have setup, but it you happen to be available it is useful.

Self-Raid

At the end of many streams the streamer will want to "self-raid." This means they will do a Twitch raid from the Lichess channel to their own, bringing over the viewers they accumulated during the Lichess stream. Streamers should learn how to do this for themselves but some need a little help.

  1. The streamer should not say anything like "this is the last game" some viewers will be confused and think they are done streaming. When the time comes simply say something like "I'm going to continue on my own channel now" and do the raid.
  2. Turn on the streamers channel in the restreamer. This step is very important and often forgotten. We want the raid to smoothly arrive to a channel that is already live. Every second of delay will cost viewers.
  3. Start the Twitch raid by typing /raid in the twitch chat from the lichess account or a lichess editor account.
  4. A box will appear on the twitch interface with a countdown. You must either wait for the countdown to end or hit "raid now."
  5. Once you are sure the raid has gone through, turn off the Lichess channel on the restreamer.

After the stream

  • It's wise to make sure all channels are turned off on the restreamer when not expecting a stream. Streamers often forget to change their stream key when going back to stream on their own channel and this will prevent accidental broadcasts.
