As for the question of health benefits. I know a man, Dr. Iain McGilchrist, who has literally read every study on the subject ever written. He assures me that those who claim teetotaling (i.e., never drinking) is ideal have misread the data in every case, because it is very clearly not. Moderate drinking is key to optimum health, there is really no question of it at this point.
Cheers!
Just released today: A new advisory by the U.S. Surgeon General on the link between alcohol and cancer risk. It doesn't appear to be a huge risk to me, but it does seem to be a real risk nonetheless. I guess Dr. McGilchrist will say that the U.S. Surgeon General has misread the data. I don't know who's right, but it appears there could be a debate in the offing.

In the recent past, I think the consensus was that a little alcohol was good for your health. I've seen that starting to change; More people (including me) are starting to take the position that any amount of alcohol is bad for the body.
Alcoholic beverages can have many benefits, depending on what you drink and how they are made. Ones such as kombucha or wine can have many probiotics and healthy cultures to help with your gut health. Beer generally doesn’t have these because of how they were processed from wheat, but like I said it can vary depending on which beer. As for the alcohol itself, I’m really not sure.
Regarding smoking, I think the universal opinion is that any smoking is bad.
Good when you take a hit, really bad afterwards. It solves a problem you didn’t already have, and then creates that same problem after it’s solved it, leading to an infinite loop of dependency.
And while excessive sugar consumption isn't really on most people's radar yet, I think it soon will be. (It's the fructose in sugar that's the big baddie.) I think people will soon realize how bad sugar is for the liver and how addictive it really is.
When I was still living with my parents, they were all over the sugar. Nowadays, I pretty much have whatever I want lol ;)

For certain cancers, like breast, mouth, and throat cancers, evidence shows that the risk of developing cancer may start to increase around one or fewer drinks per day.
This line is from the surgeon general page mentioned above. I don't find this helpful. I want numbers. If my risk goes from negligible to negligible + 30% (still negligible!), I'm not too concerned. I'll keep drinking and have a non-negligible good time.
Unfortunately, I dug a little deeper in the surgeon general's report and the numbers are a bit worse than I expected. :(

I hope you aren't "like 20" (forgetting your age in your 20s? seek help) since to drink alcohol you should be 21. Saying alcohol tastes bad is like saying caffeine tastes bad just because you hate Dr. pepper. I agree that becoming an alcoholic is stupid. I suck enough at texting without being under the influence.

Its not the taste of it why people drink. After drinkin a certain amaunt of alcoholic beverages you get drunk and that feels very good. And its not the smell why people smoke, smoking relaxes you and you get a little high from it.become calmer and taking the smoke in becomes joyfull thing after a while. But too much of both drinking and smoking eventually can cause very bad results for you.If you are a disciplined person and can manage to drink once or twice a week only.and not exagurate it.only enuff to get you a little drunk, you are fine.If you smoke not more than 5 cigarettes a day.if you can keep that number.you are fine but Its harder to restrict yourself than you think.once or twice a week drinking becomes everyday thing after a couple years.5 cigarettes becomes a pack after a coouple years. It is best to not start at all if you havent started yet
Where did you get all that number from? 5 cigs a day is rly bad tf... smoking at all is bad and has like no good effect, just don't do it.. it will take a toll on your lungs

Loneliness. 100%

Sorry, but you're wrong. Loneliness is one reason, but it's far from the only reason. Alcohol can be physically addictive, regardless of emotions.

There are probably several causes. But loneliness, love is the most primary of all. That's what chess is for. :)

why people are alcoholics?
Could it be they drink to much?
