To tell you the truth (although I'm not wild about the answer), I would be surprised if Putin is not at least a Class A player, if not a Candidate Master. Scratch an old Russian and you will likely scratch a pretty good player. And even if they can't play chess, be careful about playing dominoes with them for a wager.

Perhaps it's changed, but Russia has now long had a chess-loving culture. And, despite my serious disagreement with Putin's recent actions, I have to suspect that if he were not very intelligent (and a few other things) he would not be in his current position.

I'm not fond of Putin's recent decisions. But I would be careful not to underrate him.

We can take some comfort from this, however: chess is not foreign to Ukraine, either, to say the least.

You won't find Noflaps, either, @NeuralGnat . But I've played far more games of chess than there are stars visible to the naked eye.

And I've never even run a country.

You won't find Howard Staunton on the FIDE lists, either. But ... with all due respect to Morphy ... Staunton played some devilishly good games!

The only reason I made that last post was the image in my mind of Putin in a large tournament hall sitting across from a 13 year old kid picking his nose. A guy can dream, right? haha
