I played a chess tournament and made these mistakes

I have heard when going to a tournament, you shall not experiment with openings you don't know, and instead go for ones you know, I am thinking that this is your first mistake in a chess tournament, however, it's okay and you can always improve, just by forgetting the bad times and maximize your good times.

GOOD LUCK ON YOUR CHESS JOURNEY

NEVER experiment with openings before a tournament.
You want to be able to "blitz" out your theory and feel comfortable with a time advantage.
The rest of the game will be stressful enough!

It's not just the time factor. When playing a familiar opening, you are more likely to be familiar with the positions and structures you get out of it, the plans to go for and also typical plans your opponent may have. It's a level of comfort you can hardly expect if you prepare some new opening you haven't played before or only rarely.
