theres so many gms because chess has exploded since the dark days of the soviet union. and the resources available to players have also greatly increased one's ability to play 30000 games a year with instruction much more available to people that just did not have an available coach within walking distance for some in this world...closer to many is probably more accurate that have an internet connection.. i still have never heard of any coaches in a 50 mile radius of where i am and i live in a valley with a 1000000 people plus. Even my club never mentioned anyone to help that might even live in Fresno Ca or Bakersfield. if there are coaches in this valley they are not interested in reaching out aggressively to the average shlub. And yes everyone wants to be a Gm but many know they wont or cant for this reason or that.

@BlockMyPremove i personally think they should remove these lesser chess titles like nm or fm kinda weird we give “master titles” to people who I wouldn’t consider being a “master”
When I first joined lichess I literally thought there were about 20 GMs in history now I see thousands,I had no idea there were so many titled players, it's unbelievable to me now how little I knew about how many titled players there are, it's mind boggling I really really thought it was an elite few only given to genius players xxx
