In a rated game, if I disconnect, my opponent shouldn't just be allowed to just declare themselves the winner while I still have time on the clock.
If I'm playing a 15+0 time control game, with over 10 minutes still on my clock, it seems pretty unreasonable to just allow my opponent to decide that they feel like they've won 20 moves in because I didn't instantly notice that I'd disconnected.

Hee hee. Always a joy to click "claim victory" :D Once I missed it by half a second when the player returned so now I click my mouse quickly over the space I know the "claim victory" box will appear when he has three seconds left :D I wouldn't if it was a good game, but I play against a lot of blitzy trash in rapid.

@GCHQ , in general, if an opponent leaves a game, (regardless of the reason), it is usually because they are rage quitting and will not be coming back. Occasionally your situation does come up, but lichess has no way of knowing that you didn't rage quit the game. Because of this, and because in general disconnection is not what happened, lichess has chosen not to make the connected player wait for long periods of time in case of the small likelyhood that the other player really did not want to leave the game.

@lchessmatchnerd That's a pretty big assumption.
As someone with under 50 rated non bullet games logged against your account are you really in the position to make that claim?

These are the rules that you must agree to, if you don't agree, you don't have to play.
I've stopped playing games here under an account due to poor sports, including rage quitters. Now when I see that green circle disappear, I resign--it's not worth my time to watch seconds tick off just to achieve an empty victory.

This is also the forum to make suggestions about how to improve the site. It wasn't an ultimatum.
Personally I prefer to play on the FIDE app for rated play, but at the same time having a better rating on here means I can find casual challenges against strong opponents more easily, since there is a much larger player base.

I think lichess is on the right here for not making the other player wait until after your clock reaches zero ....
But I also think lichess (on rated games, on anon its ok to be fast) should wait a little bit more until it allows the other player to be able to claim victory.
And that's because it should take into account a worse case scenario e.g how much time it needs for an average computer that doesnt have a SSD to crash, reset and reboot to windows and add like +10ish seconds to that.
That's how much time should be allotted for the disconnected player to re-login. I dont play that much rated games, mostly anon but I remember a game where my computer just got crazy threw a blue screen I restarted it (and had an SSD on that machine so the booting time wasnt that big) but once I finally opened my browser and lichess loaded the game was lost.
EDIT: Ok I know that this could lead to frustration e.g the opponent could have several crashes during the game which understandably would be very annoying for the other player to wait so much time for his opponent to restart the PC multiple times but like at least for the first two disconnects or atleast for the first disconnect this "bigger" timeframe should be allotted during the game because crashes happen to everybody especially the windows users.. :P

hee hee. Whenever that happens in the future, imagine me like a little devil on your shoulder going hee hee. It will heighten your annoyance to unsustainable levels :)

@Rayus and I think that one guy matters! Put yourself in that guys shoes especially if the match is against a lower rated player (thus you will lose even more points in a match you probably would have won anyway) !
Also I dont think the ratio is 99 to 1 more like 70 to 30 or 80 to 20 or something like that.
