The 2026 FIDE Candidates Tournament - What to Know and What to Expect

Thanks, very interesting!

One thing I'd still like to know:
What happens if a player who has already qualified for the Candidates Tournament finishes in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place at the World Cup?

To give an extreme example:
What happens if Giri comes in first, Gukesh second, Bluebaum third, and Pragg fourth?

Then, in my view, the four losers of the quarter-finals would have to play their own tournament for the three qualifying places.

They may have to play their own match, or they may just award it that way, I'm not too sure. Similar to how Abasov qualified after Carlsen withdrew his spot maybe. We'll find out soon.

It's official - Hikaru has qualified to the 2026 Candidates by rating (provided that Magnus does not change his mind last minute which is virtually 0%).
