This blog makes a fair argument and I agree but there are a couple things you say about windows that isn't true.

For one thing, you can have your PC not know your location. There are settings for that. Also you don't need an online account to use a windows PC. You CAN uninstall AI apps things like Copilot and Microsoft 365 from the PC. And windows 10 isn't completely useless. The only changes Microsoft had been making to Windows 10 anyway were small security updates. I'm not saying that there's anything bad about Linux, I just wanted to point out some of these things.

well, i think the cans for windows is still limited compared to linux, but i get what you mean ;) i just didn't mention stuff because not everyone are ready to use "hacking tools" like the terminal, and linux desktop has evolved to the point where terminals aren't required anymore.. unless you want fastfetch, cava, cmatrix and stuff for your rice screenshot to share on r/unixporn xD

there are also "solutions" like https://github.com/ntdevlabs/tiny11builder ;) lol
I see XD

@MelvillesDayOff

I haven't been using Windows for years, but I recently read that the hacks some people are using to avoid online accounts, giving phone nums, etc. do not work anymore. Whether that's true or it is still possible to do workarounds doesn't matter much for me. It's clear such tricks can only be temporary.

One of the issues with Windows that many have complained about, is that even though you can disable certain pieces of telemetry data by manually turning off ~100 options, there are still lots of things that cannot be turned off at all. And it's a black box really, and you don't have control, nor do you know what exactly that data is. After all, it's closed source and there is a for-profit corporation behind it.

As for the AI (but not only) software that comes pre-installed and that might be doing things with potentially negative impact on privacy and security... Those who don't want it but know about it might think "well, luckily, I know how to uninstall/disable it, so problem solved (for me)". However, even if you can do this today, the vast majority of users won't do anything about it and then when something is already used by 98% of users, it will probably become non-optional. In other words, what you have today, likely won't be the same tomorrow.

ESU was never free. you either need to pay with your money (last time it was 30 bucks, might have increased, for who knows) or with your data, by creating a m$ account and having your files "backed-up" in their cloud. will they not use it to train their ai? i would be very suprised indeed if they just let it sit there for free, "out of the kindness of their hearts" so that you wouldn't lose access to your files even if your computer (hardware or software.. maybe bitlocker?) has a problem. because they are a for-profit, and doesn't care about you or where your data goes as long as they have control of it. don't you understand? it's either pay with cash or pay with money, and what do you get? surveillance tools on a cr*ppy system.
