Very well done indeed!
I think it would be easier for us to comment directly on the blog itself. feature request please?

I really have no words to describe how amazed I am to see this feature, and so well-crafted too! You really did a good job here with all the features and the concept of playing random positions is something I've thought about for a long time. It really is the way forward for chess improvement and I commend you once again on this brilliant project. I hope this gets the traction it deserves!
Just as a clarification, I've seen this concept online before, but it was never implemented like this. Here there's a possibility to actually play quite normal-looking positions that could arise in your own games, so I see it as a really valuable tool for chess training and improvement.
Thank you @FischyVishy so much for the positive feedback! Makes it worth the time I spent on it :)
The website has been up for a few months now, and sadly I am finding it difficult to get traction for it. Probably a case of it being a niche feature in a niche sport.

Why does it have to be random all the time. Why not give the first move to be the choice of the position, and the unit of competition to be 2 games, either with that position, or with the choice of the opponent starting second in first game.
Either way, in sequences of games the knowledge preparation versus the skill preparation would be negligible.
but the training and learning over many games (including performance games where the big stupid brain is always watching), could still be herded by the smaller and less stupid brain that we call conscious.
The 2 brainz point of view.
Edit: I spoke too soon. It does seem to allow full control of the initial position. Is the detour to the website back to lichess games part of the automatism? Now I need to read the blog with that question in mind. (I only skimmed).
Edit: And yes it does (kind of). I guess, you thought about everything.. Well done. I have been wanting this directly on lichess for ever. Although I would have used 960 also as part of the bag of somewhat balanced initial conditions.
Using SF might be against my religion, but it could be seen as studying SF bias by human means... what does it not detect as imbalance still... I will try to see if one can choose a 960 I.C. (initial configuration if condition not paletable).
@dboing Thank you for the suggestions! I genuinely didn't think about 960, which is bizarre, considering I am quite fond of it. I will definitely work on adding positions from 960 games (the Lichess database does have 960 games). Will let you know when I have it implemented :)

From the about page I see that popular feature requests may be implemented. I have a feature idea...
It would be nice if there were a convenient way to subscribe to notifications for thematic tournaments (arenas), or have a version of a tournament calendar which only shows thematic tournaments.
@Toadofsky, thank you for the suggestion. I don't think I understand it properly. By thematic tournaments, do you mean tournaments where games start from random positions? If so, I think that would be a feature for Lichess itself. Firstly, it has all the infrastructure in place to handle these tournaments, and also more importantly, the required user base.

Chess960 random positions would also work great because even in 960 one has to try to emerge unscathed from the opening phase. This feature just lets us play middlegame positions, cool 960 middlegame positions, which I assume for most people is the most fun part of chess. Looking forward to 960 implementation!

is there a way to get the positions with black to move?

Hey there, looks great, thanks!!! Do you happen to have a public twitter profile, I posted about your project there and wanted to give you credit...

Truly awesome work, super!
Perhaps a cool feature would be to select random game, from one's own games.

In the deliberate choice of initial position you put the same kind of choice as lichess does in its editor.
how hard would it be to also put the the 960 so they don,t come as random all the time. and avoid us the work of having to manually edit a board to achieve the same thing.. For those of us who think many games is a thing. and chess learning happens anywhere we use our chess muscle. I just checked, and I might have missed it again. I find this silly that perfomance single game balance obsession.. The point of Fisher was to avoid knowledge preparation evolution of chess culure at the top high level circuits I guess. But the means to achieve that don'T have to be religion (as in literal rigid dogma of method).
