Hello, I hope this is acceptable. I have a question on puzzle 61517, it suggests knight to h3 instead of f3 (which I had chosen). Can someone explain why h3 is a better move?
cheers
lichess.org/training/61517There is no obvious continuation after f3 -- you've just executed a check white can avoid by moving his king. h3 you're winning his queen (by him either taking your knight with the queen only to be taken by your queen or if he just moves the king to avoid the check, bring your rook in 29 ... Rf7).
But really all of that is explained by looking at the analysis board after the puzzle is solved (or you give up and view the solution).
From the h3 square the knight can combine with the rook to hit f2. There is no such weak square to hit if the knight is on f3.
@Davelz Thank you, I see it now. I was focused on the scenario that queen would take knight on f3 but as you explain it wouldn't have to since there's no weak square and still have a chance of saving the queen.
