Requesting a take back - what is the common approach?

If you are 1500 and you play against a 800, even in a rated game... You could give a take back or two, just to show your opponent how true gentlemen look like. If you are at the same lever, no takebacks rawwr!
Thanks for all reactions, advice, tips and thoughts. Very helpful.
proper way is to disable whole thing from settings. In blitz mistakes happen + you would be allowing the takeback when your clock is running. time matter 30 secs ahead in 5 min game is about half pawn worth and when down on time it winning advantage. So do not handicap yourself.
Amateurish. If you like to be that way, take back.

(Edit: "dilettante" probably's more to the point. Or bumbling.)
"Amateurish. If you like to be that way, take back."

Taking into consideration that we are all amateurs here, with perhaps one or two occasional exceptions, your comment doesn't really mean much.
I may be beating a dead horse with this reply, but here is my approach.

I turn off takebacks in rated games in my settings. If we are playing for rating points, I feel each player should be accountable for their mistakes and the rating will reflect them. I would still be happy to analyze the game afterward with them if they wish.

I allow takebacks in unrated games as I feel there is an opportunity for instruction. I will not request takebacks as I am happy to analyze the positions after the game, but in these situations where there is nothing on the line, I like to see my opponent catch their mistake and find a better move. I will even offer advice if I can see a clear plan. I feel like unrated games are an opportunity to create beautiful disasters.
I almost always allow takebacks ... but sometimes I regret ist. Usually there are 2 takebacks necessary to annihilate the consequences of some blunder (because if he had seen that he loses the queen he wouldn't have made the fatal move first place) - and for one of them the opponent uses my time ... I consider such a behaviour as quite unsportsmanlike.
Lost a couple of games that way.
