  1. The suffix -tarian is quite flexible, though it usually adds the meaning of 'practitioner or advocate' to a noun. It has nothing inherently to do with food. So a vegetarian practices eating vegetables, and a humanitarian practices a certain philosophy.

  2. English is not stopping you from calling ketchup a smoothie. Go ahead and drink it.

  3. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe verbs and nouns that change forms by shifting the vowels are Anglo-Saxon. The verb 'to swim' is an example of a word that goes into this category (swim, swam, swum), and the noun 'goose' is as well (goose, geese). Booth is not Anglo-Saxon, so it doesn't follow this pattern.

Believe me, English is messed up, but not for any of the first two reasons (you could argue that the most messed up thing about English is the spelling, and it's so inconsistent because it has so many words of different origin, like you pointed out in example 3).
