How many dead civilians is needed for Lichess maintainers to consider the removal of the russian flag?
I understand that it would make no sense of ban anybody, as being russian does not mean you support war. But as Putin uses ultra nationalist mechanisms as a propaganda tool, it would be the less to say "No, we do not consider that being russian is today something you can be proud of".
I know that it's only a game, and should not be opiniated. But I'd like to remind you one famous quote: "silence of slippers is more dangerous than the sound of boots".
So please consider the action that will ask you the smallest amount of courage.
Thanks.

Your comment made me flag the Russian flag.
I'm sick and tired of you snowflakes trying to "fight a war by changing flags".

And I suggest if someone is caught stealing and runs off we ban all shoes.

The point of the flag is to represent where you are from, not to show nationalistic pride.
I always question people who think everyday citizens should be ashamed when the leaders of their country do something horrible. I'm American, and the USA has done plenty of things worse than what Russia is doing now, so should we remove the American flag from players accounts? You are from France, do you know the horrible things people from your nation have done in Africa? Maybe we should ban the French flag to show that we don't support imperialism.

@fivelights the question is not about what ours countries did by the past, but what it does now. And the capacity of a nation to recognize their mistakes is probably their best strength. And yes, France still has some path to walk.
But we are speaking of now, not yesterday. The fact is that the only way of getting out of this situation without a total disaster is in russian people hands. Is there a chance that they understand that they follow a bunch of mad men? Is there a chance that they will rise against yet another madness for the first time in more than 100 years? A flag on a gaming site won't change nothing. But at least it's a small sign from the rest of the world that they should earn the pride of being russian, because as now, being russian and doing nothing to get a decent country is a shame.

You really do believe that normal Russians should be ashamed? Even though they had nothing to do with the decisions being made and have no more power to change it than you do?

Yes, they have the power. There are in no example in history of stable democraty coming without a strong will from the people. And most of the time, people had to fight to get it. Both our countries went threw this.
Saying that get rid of a dictator is undoable, and doing nothing is exactly the "silence of slippers".
To achieve that, they need to 1) understand that the situation is not normal and not acceptable, 2) realize that together, they have the power to change it.
And yes, I think that any sign in that direction, even the smallest, is a good sign.
If they do not start this process, it simply means that they prefers to stay in their slippers. And yes, they should be ashamed.

Whuh? So they're auditioning to be in their country or something?
And yeah, a flag on a gaming site doesn't add up to a hill of beans.

Yeah except that isn't what I said at all. We're talking about whether or not some random Russian should be ashamed because of Putin, and you say that they should because it's their responsibility to overthrow him. Buddy why don't you go overthrow Putin? This is a nonsense standard you're putting towards random people because you want to feel like you're taking a stand against injustice, when what you're suggesting does literally nothing to anyone with any real power in Russia.

Hello,
A few days after the invasion of the Russian Federation army in the territory of Ukraine and after some users requested Lichess to share its official stance on the matter, the Lichess Staff released an official statement (see below) where it is summarized what the general consensus and thought among the members are and what the actions and repercussions, if any and in which area, will be taken according to our Terms of Service.
I suggest you read it: https://lichess.org/blog/Yie1MhIAACAAk6OQ/lichess-statement-on-the-war-in-ukraine.
Little spoiler: there is a part dedicated to the flags of Russia and Belarus.
