Is GM Maurice Ashley a quality player?

Magnus Carlsen's performance rating at the Isle of Man was 2909. He gained 10 points from 2827 to 2837.
That FIDE link is behind a login page, so might not be the most accessible way to show this.

Olimpbase's historical lists are helpful here.

First, he had hit 2500 on the nose before 1999, and then he went just a bit over in 2001, as others have pointed out.

Look at his ratings on the January 1998 and July 2001 lists (both official, published lists) here:

www.olimpbase.org/Elo/player/Ashley,%20Maurice.html

I'm not a big fan of his presentation style, but as was pointed out earlier, the organizers want someone who's strong enough to watch engine analysis and identify interesting lines to show the viewers.

Ashley does a reasonable job at that.

As I said above, I'm not a big fan of his style, and am all for some good-natured Maurice Ashley criticism, but let's at least be factually correct in doing so :)

in order to access the link, one must be a member. His performance was 2500+. However, his final rating after his 3rd norm was 2440 in 1999. He did not play in any subsequent tournaments.

No point in arguing this over semantics, interpretations of what an official rating constitutes.
The last poster just said he went over 2500 in 1999 and 2001, of course he played subsequent to 1999. Repeatedly denying the reality that Maurice went over 2500 won't make your desired reality real.

Please stop trolling:

-he had a peak rating of 2504 (FIDE list July 2001), can be seen in all given sources like the German wikipedia mentioned above de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maurice_Ashley_(Schachspieler)
-he had lots of successes, in fact "performances" close to 2600 (according to my CB research)
-there were tournaments + games after he became GM

I am not the biggest fan of Maurice Ashley, but this goes too far here.
@a_pleasant_illusion True, the link requires a login. On the other hand it goes directly to the official source.

@mdinnerspace He had a FIDE published rating of 2504 in July 2001. This has nothing to do with semantics or interpretations. He has had an official, published FIDE rating above 2500.

Shouldn't users who post outright lies and/or pure insults (eg. mdinnerspace / xeroxx) be - at least temporarily - banned? Gonna report...
I think criticism of a fairly public person is fine. I really doubt a player of Maurice's caliber would care about what some low life scum in this forum thread thinks about him. He seems like a genuinely nice person. Of course questioning his GM title into is just silly.
