Why do some players...

Play nothing but blitz and bullet for *thousands and thousands* of games, even though their rating never improves and everyone in chess knows that it never will improve that way? These same players are the guys who like to play non increment and formulate their entire strategy around winning on time. Why would they waste their time like that? That's not what chess is about and it's not helping them improve at all so ...what's the deal?

Before someone says: "It's fun for them" - Really? Never improving and deliberately doing what is going to guarantee you never do improve is fun? Why play?

Just curious...
Their overall rating might not improve, but one can produce little gems every once in a while, catching big game, winning a minor/local tournament. Moreover, it is fun!?
They're not winning any tournaments anywhere if their rating is stagnant for 2+ years and all they do is play speed chess variants on Lichess.

You've seen these very same guys post threads asking why they're not improving. Everyone tells them "because all you do is play blitz/bullet for 12+ hours a day" and then guess what? They leave the thread, never respond again, and continue playing hundreds of ultrabullet games all afternoon. That's the very definition of someone who's lost their sanity.

It's sad to see.
My rating hasn't changed very much for say 20 years, I mainly train by means of Blitz in the internet, thus: I produce little gems every once in a while, I catch some big game occasionally, win some minor/local tournaments every year. :D
But you play OTB, have good ratings on here, and aren't in the class of players I'm talking about. I'm talking about the guy who's literally performing at sub 1000 OTB playing nothing but blitz and bullet online all day and then refusing to understand why they don't improve even though everyone tells them the same thing every time they ask.

I see a lot of these guys who are completely out of their minds and I'm just curious why there are so many of these stubborn little guys in Chess.
"and everyone in chess knows that it never will improve that way?" I'll play the devil's advocate and say that it's completely false.

You definitely can improve from playing blitz (and even bullet). It IS chess, you have to think, apply plans and work for the win, it depends on the player but at every game you can learn a little something new, practice your calculations ability, learn an opening move or what not.

It's not insanity, what is insane is to keep playing a game at a time control you don't enjoy for a hobby that you only ever practice online. I'll argue that the 1200 player has as much fun playing another 1200 than the 2200 playing another 2200.

Maybe for you only improving is fun but what is your final plan, when you'll start stagnating (and one day you will) will you just quit chess? Will you desperately try to improve and let frustration overwhelm you? Or will you keep having fun with challenging opponents while listening to great music and having a cup of delicious tea?

--EDIT
I didn't read your last messages, if someone want to improve, make a topic about it and then don't listen to the advices, it is their problem. Probably they don't really care if they improve and just can't stop playing for fun, who can blame them?

Ask these guys.

youtu.be/mB1r6k8rUY0. This is a lichess tournament with cash prizes.

When the pro's go at it in 1.0 it ends in mate a lot of the time. Its not always about flagging.
