It didn't take 300 seconds guys, it took less than a minute top.

Also, I can't understand why you would close the tab before opening the game on a new device. If you didn't close the tab, you would be gone for exactly 0 seconds and wouldn't have to worry about any timeout.
@PurpleInferno said in #9:
Closing the tab is a deliberate action, so the server assumes you quit the game on purpose. Why would you not just navigate to Lichess on the new device without doing anything to prematurely quit the game on the old one?
I closed it because I assumed I had a few seconds at least. Blaming the user for a faulty system makes no sense. It's like asking "why don't show your ID to this random site?" when they don't need it, the rule is wrong here, focus. Even if the server assumes I closed the tab on purpose, it can't know why so wtf, it shouldn't just immediately and unilaterally decide to grant an option to force the forfeit.

Sadly, unless something changed recently, it's only 120 seconds (80s for rapid, 40s for blitz). And half of that when "losing" (which is determined by material, IIRC). Unfortunately some values on Lichess were set with blitz in mind and are not very appropriate for a classical game. (TBH, 40s seems too long for blitz or bullet so the only value which is kind of OK is probably the rapid one.)
It was not 120s, it was less than a minute but I'll test this.

I'm pretty sure that this happens when you repeatedly leave the game. Just don't leave the game it's not that complicated.
No, you're pretty sure and completely wrong. I haven't left the game at all. Haven't left the tournament at all at any moment, no disconnections issues either, nothing.
"It's not that complicated" It doesn't solve the issue. What if for any reason I have to reboot my PC, which takes a minute, I can't do it? Why? That makes no sense, no classical player would mind to have to wait 2-3 minutes for their opponent to reconnect. Even if they do, well, they signed up for a full game.

You did have a few seconds. You lost the game 10.7 seconds after your opponent moved. Of course it's your fault - you could have easily done it in 0 seconds simply by not quitting the game! You even had to accept a confirmation dialog! (I don't think the site can customize the dialog, so it would have just said "changes you have made will not be saved", but you're supposed to infer that you'll lose whatever you were doing if you accept).

Not sure what dialog you mean... you typically don't have to confirm anything if you close a browser tab, browser window, or app.

For example, if you try to close the tab while typing a comment on Reddit, Chrome will give you the following modal dialog:
Leave site?
Changes you made may not be saved.
[Leave] [Cancel]
I get the same if I try to leave a game I'm playing on Lichess. Firefox has a slightly different message (and a less obnoxious implementation), but the idea is the same.
Hmm, I guess mobile browsers don't do that. Not sure if OP was playing on a desktop or a phone/tablet.

I don't get any dialog on Safari or Chrome (just tested in a game against SF, and I cannot remember having seen this on lichess).
So this is surely not something to rely on...

Stockfish doesn't trigger it for me either. Try a rated non-correspondence game against a human.

I also noticed that going to opponent profile page from game for less than 10s is enough to lose.
Basically if you navigate away form the same game tab, you instantly lose.
Is that silly? Absolutely
But knowing that open new tab and switch to that if you need to "navigate away" doing so grant you lot of time.
For this reason I say such system design is schizophrenic IMHO.

Indeed - even playing anonymous and unrated live does this. Not sure if this is new, I never payed attention, or simply don't close tabs. :-)

How did you know that? You calculated it or you have the timestamp of the moves?
It's not about whose fault it is, it's about a nonsensical system, you're just blindly defending lichess because you like it, I like the site too but it doesn't mean it's perfect.
And the "you're supposed to infer this completely arbitrary rule that I didn't say at all" doesn't make sense, do you really believe this?
Even if you do believe it, facts are it doesn't say this so it's an improvable system, if you're in good faith you'll agree to that. It's too strict of a system for classical, all I'm asking for is 2 minutes. That's all.
Plus it's not like I didn't wait ages the whole game, I literally waited considerably more than my opponent to play my moves and yet I'm the one who's punished because I dared to close the tab for 10 seconds.

Both are possible.
