I'm listening go on
"We understand that this stuff might not be as exciting as talking about a new feature"
On the cotrary, I think this is the most exciting thing of all. You guys can build up and carry on with this state-of-the-art activity *totally ads-free*? This is a revolutionary gesture! A message of hope in this regime of fake economy, the global dictatorship of the falsely free.
I am sorry for not having any of the expertise you need now, I'd be glad to participate, instead of contributing with just my 2¢ (literally).

LiChess is a testament to decency, goodwill and aspiration. It knocks commercial chess websites out of the ballpark. Long may it continue.
Good idea!
Lichess... making it bigger and better...
I think we can't wait for what are we going to see in the future of Lichess!

If you are not already doing so...
Please consider investing (alone or with others) a little bit of the donations into (truely) renewable energy power plants (solar/wind) and energy storages instead of just buying that energy from an electricity supplier until eternity. That way you could help reduce the impact of climate change and nuclear waste on humans and the environment we need to survive, reduce your energy costs over time and prevent blackouts from affecting your server infrastructure too much. Maybe you could reduce energy costs to almost 0 at some point, apart from maintenance cost, or even generate income (negative costs) when you sell surplus energy or offer storage capacities. You could also offer surplus energy to other foundations like soup kitchens for example. Since solar energy is mostly produced at noon, it can help provide energy for cooking lunch meals for poor/homeless/etc. people.
You should probably ask a financial adviser about the smartest way to invest. 5% investment over 15 years or so may make you independent from external energy sources. Or maybe one of the energy providers offers such a plan already (I doubt it, because I haven't seen any energy providers coming up with dedicated plans for energy storage around here).
Solar panels on the roof of your server plant also may help to keep the roof colder and reduce energy usage of the servers given the probability that they use less electric energy in a colder environment.
Integrating solar panels into your infrastructure also may help to improve grid stability, because less energy needs to flow to your servers.
It may also help improve the national security of the nation in which the servers are in, because you would help to decentralize power generation. Nuclear power plants for example are still a big risk when being attacked by symmetric forces (Zaporizhzhia power plant in Ukraine) or asymmetric forces (e. g. impact of abducted airplane or truck loaded with explosives like on the Kerch Strait Bridge in Crimea).

I'm proud to support Lichess. It's nice to be a part of something not only fun but philosophically meaningful as well.
