in sicilian defense, why 2...d6 is played?

I'm a beginner and recently I've started learning Sicilian defense.
I wanna know the purpose of this move.
Sicilian was first opening i learnt as a beginner . Its a good opening to learn . 2 d6 according to my knowledge , is played because you want to control center and provoke d4 since you will have extra central pawn .
if you do not want to play complicated positions how will you improve ? Sicilian dragon was the first opening i learnt and i still play it , i do not regret it . #4

so d6 has the potential to play e5 ,right?
With 2...d6 the d pawn controls the e5 square and defends the c5 pawn, and you also extend the scope of your light squared bishop and your queen.
The benefits of this move :
1. Protect the c5 pown
2. Control e5
3. Activate the bishop
4. Give space for the knight
