I reached for my ancient yellowed copy of Irving Chernev's FireSide Book of Chess ( first chess book I ever owned).

@corvusmellori Thanks for clearing that up. OK, Chernev didn't get all of his facts right all of the time, but he is still my favorite chess writer by orders of magnitude. ( Magnustude?)
