I searched everywhere in FAQ but could not find any answers!

Why do I only get "7 points" (not 8 or 9) against 116 higher rated player (him:1869 minus me:1753) see: lichess.org/AVjR29dScXMn

Am aware that some new players may have high ratings but have a question-mark behind the rating being it "provisional" I guess ... but in this case my opponent is active for 3 years since Apr 24, 2018 and played 1982+ games!

I searched everywhere in FAQ but could not find any answers.

Sincerely,
John Kuhles

It's probably because your rating deviation is 45.00

@Yeltcki thank you for responding ...

"rating deviation" score ... is not mentioned in FAQ#ratings as a factor how to reward more or less to some one or not!

btw my "rating deviation score" is way below average! ... even lower than yours Sir ;)

@infinite2009 I guess you did not read the title of my post here lol

The person who provided the link is like everyone else but you, well aware that you didn't search everywhere. We all know you didn't search anywhere.

Go here: https://lichess.org/faq#ratings

Rating deviation, and the rest of the mathematics, is explained in GREAT DETAIL.

Exactly. That's why you only get so few points. Low rating deviation means high confidence in your rating. If your rating is very likely correct, obviously it won't change very much just because of one win.

To make it more obvious: If you win exactly 50% of games against 1500 rated players and suddenly win against a GM once, it doesn't mean you are actually a GM and deserve a high rating or should gain like 100 points. It probably was just luck.

Rating points aren't like money which you can earn by winning against high-ranked players. It's supposed to reflect your skill. If you actually suddenly got a lot better and should have a higher rating you'll win continuously and your rating deviation will increase so that you will gain more points again and quickly get to your new actual rating until you start losing more again.

I get it now ... thanks for explaining in layman's terms

No, that's not true. Your RD doesn't increase after a series of wins. @benwerner

Where in the world did you get that idea?

@StingerPuzzles Hm, I thought it would but maybe it's not true. Not an expert on Glicko and don't remember where I got that from.

The rating volatility can go up can go up under certain circumstances but not the RD.
