What did I do wrong? Am I not allowed to view profiles of my opponents during games? Was this a bug?
Well, you can check a profile, or do other things. But when you navigate away from the game you technically "leave" the game. It's not clear that you intend to come back. There is a certain amount of time per game that you are allowed to be "away", but it's not a massive amount - after that, the opponent has the option to claim a win (or a draw).
So you either be fast, or you check in another tab - while the other is still connected.
Can I get my rating back?
No. And it's not because it was your fault, but because even if it was a due to a bug, there would be no rating refund either. It's just not something that is feasible to do. And as ratings are adjusting themselves quickly, it is also much less of an issue than the (somewhat understandably) embarrassed player assumes it to be. :)
