how are points calculated?

I won against a player on 1198 points. I am on 1320+. I was awarded 8 points but he lost 15. That doesn't seem fair. That was a big loss to someone who is about 125 points higher in rank. It would have been fairer if he was only minus 8 to my plus 8.
It depends not just on your rating but also on your "rating deviation" (this is a slightly technical thing so people don't talk about it much). Basically rating deviation depends on things like how long it's been since you last played a rated game, how consistently you've scored in recent rated games, etc. It tries to measure how "accurate" your current rating is. If your rating deviation is high, then the change in your rating per game will be greater than if your rating deviation is low. A "low" rating deviation is something like 50. Yours, in classical, is currently around 50, which means lichess thinks that your current classical rating is an accurate indication of your playing strength within this community. (From my own experience, this statistic can be frighteningly accurate!)

In this case, your opponent probably just had a higher rating deviation, maybe 70 or 80, say. So their change in rating was greater.

Every time you play rated, the result changes both your rating *and* your rating deviation. So don't worry, that player probably won't gain/lose quite so many points with their next game.
Rating system implemented here is absolutely unrealistic.

Winning/losing streak depends on too many factors: age, concentration, mood (inspiration), healt condition, good/bad days/weeks/months... Young and FIDE rating CM+ players does not understand that.

Real player strength have nothing to do with rating for amateurs here. It would be nice to have such categories divider - amaterus/pro chess players in which case would be used a bit modified rules for system ratings. Glicko-2 is absolutely not adequate for chess amateurs, even destimulative
@fastlearner50 We do have amateur ratings here it is <1500 <1700 and <2000 we also have pro-players ratings here >2200. Have you not been looking at the tournaments. I also fail to see how health, age and mood should not affect your playing strength. Your entire comment does not make any sense, please restate it so I can understand.
According to your own comment you could not possibly understand how glicko rating works since you are not a CM+
@Lidraughtsorg #4

Certainly you do not understand and certinly this have no sense to you, as I have wrote already.

- How old are you? Do you have good health?
- Can you play blindfolded?
- Can you play bullet?
- Did you read any chess book, have/had chess tutor?
- Do you have official FIDE rating?
- What chess means to you: passion, warfare, fun, good chance to meat with someone, etc etc - mulltiple answers are alowed
- Do you play in real OTB tournaments, online only or both?
- Can you retain focus 100% on the game?
- Can you retain focus on entire OTB/online tournament prolong 1 to 5h or more?
- How much games in avarage you play daily by any type -bullet/blitz/rapid/slow?

Etc, etc.

Again, Glicko-2 rating system is pointless and unfair for these does not play chess seriously, nor can retain winning/losing streak (including standard deviation and/or variation, time difference between games play). If you lose first few games after registration here, you will lost 500 poinst from provisional 1500, otherwise you will fastly receive the same ammount. Glicko-2 is great for artificially maintaining rating here and it is great for cheaters.

Then, in case of losing first few games, if you the start to winning, only 6-7 you will get per game, which require 100s winnings with better standard deviation to back these 500 lost point. I certainly see no point to waste my time to accomplish that. Some people here played even 40K+ games wich is incredible, playing 50 or 100 hames a day, but still have very poor rating. I see no point in that as well.

In a word, Glicko-2 is not realistic rating system. On the contrary, FIDE rating start from 1200 (FIDE novice) and then gain/lost points regarding your opponent's FIDE rating. It is entirely different concept and much more realistic and fair to anyone.
Glicko-2 is fair enough. You cannot maintain artificial rating up or down by getting good/bad start. And in FIDE you dont start with 1200 but with provisional rating of 1505 And for they also go wildly up and down.

Elo formula is dated it cannot never be as good as any modern system. Good part of it that is computationally simple and given time of adoption in early seventies that was a great thing. Today that is pretty worthless

Hmm...

"Fair, no possibility to artificially maintain rating after registration"?

Check games and its ratings of this troll, for instance - username "YouGetNoRest" here.
yes by use computer you can do lots of things. Maintaining rating is definately one them. What that has to do with rating algorithm?
@petri999 #8

It shows very well how to get 2000+ rating fast, playing with only weak opponents, using computer or not.

If start with 1200 and gain rating point only regarding oponents current rating, such cheating would not be possible.

I have also some similar posts about allowed rated games again weak BOTs in reality, which actually have over-helmet rating from 1700 to even 2500, but they are still weak and making one good combination is enough to beat him all the time.
