Why a High Online Chess Rating Doesn’t Always Mean a High FIDE Rating

You said: "cheating with engines...artificially pushes ratings upward. Add in rating inflation (as more people join and climb), and suddenly, online numbers look bigger than they “should” be."

That's not correct and it actually works the opposite. Cheaters & people joining with multiple accounts suck rating points OUT of the system, REDUCING everyone else's rating.

For some time I've been suspecting that I in fact find it easier to focus fully on the game when playing an OTB tournament than when playing (classical) online games from home. When playing OTB, I go somewhere where I have "nothing else to do" and where people around are mostly understanding and respect that they should not disturb the players. When playing from home, there are more distractions, kids shouting, TV playing, various "could you just..." requests, having to check that kids went to bed when they should have etc. It may seem that few such interruptions in a 45+45 are nothing but it can harm one's focus a lot, especially when they happen while you are in a tricky position.

What I have seen is that you take way more time than in online trying to understand the position. And when you have 10 minutes left it feels like you have 1 minute online. When I play OTB due to the pressure or any other factor i start taking huge amounts of time for one move.
