My favorite metal band is probably Iron Maiden. They are incredibly consistent, have arguably the best rock bassist of all time, their songs aren't stupid, and Bruce Dickinson is a fantastic singer.

Darn, I can't give my one word answer.

Many know more about this than I. Today, I'll go with Black Sabbath because I love the players and their compositions, the guitar tone is awesome.

@clousems I don't know Dio's other than the hits. I wore out Blizzard of Ozz. There's also a song from the Jake Lee era, I'll think of it in a minute.

I see, Dio was in Sabbath, too. I'm more familiar with the Ozzy days.

I don't listen to a ton of metal. But i do like early Sabbath a lot, I've enjoyed a LOT of Maiden, if I'm in the mood for pure thrash I like Testament, if I'm stoned or on drugs I like Melvins.

I liked Metallica as a teenager but they got old, and I only like their first few albums anyway.

Deep Purple I appreciate as a relatively early pioneer of the genre. (Also Blue Oyster Cult).
