Great question!
I immediately started thinking of my favorite characters in fiction, but most of them are deeply human with their own sets of flaws and troubles which, let's be fair, makes for terrific fiction but isn't exactly who I would like to be.
The other side of the coin is considering beloved characters that are 'the one:' Neo from the Matrix, Luke Skywalker in the OT, Harry Potter, Rand al'Thor, etc. But that gets boring, too - and most people would just wind up becoming tyrants with unchecked power if they were imported into our universe, and life in those universes tend to be fairly brutish for their own reasons.
So the trick is to strike a balance; well rounded with no crazy superpowers and some flaws, but the freedom to act autonomously but still well-regarded.
And my first thought with these new criteria: Indiana Jones. He's respected by his peers and colleagues but incredibly self-reliant, travels the world when the mood strikes, is equally at home in the halls of academia and the most dangerous places on the planet, equally at home with obscure texts or his trusty bullwhip, fights and wins against Nazis, and is one of the sexiest bastards man or woman has laid eyes on.

@chummer :
Might this be the first adamantium piece of analysis ever observed by mankind?
Probably. Although one must never leave sight of Dick Turpin when it comes to these matters.
