My time ran out while my opponent had nothing but a king and a knight . The game resulted in a loss for me, is that how it is according to the rules or is there an issue with the platform ?
Who says „should“?
FIDE says „should not“.
It‘s like playing cards. If you show your cards to your opponents to abbreviate the „won“ game any random series must win - otherwise you lose. In other words: if there’s mate you lose.

It is probably this game.
There exists a series of legal moves leading to checkmate e.g. when the pawn promotes to a knight there is checkmate in the corner.
Hence you duly lost on time according to the FIDE Laws of Chess.
To avoid this, play with increment.
