Trading pieces is probably not a good idea. It's not good because you lose too much material. It leaves you too vulnerable. Of course you can trade pieces, just make sure you're getting a good trade. For example, you probably should not trade a knight for a knight.
Defense is a lot more important because when you are on offense you are only attacking one player. When you defend, you are defending against the other three players.
