Does checking not enforce a king move? In that case, why are checks in the game at all? Very confused.

When the king is off the board then 1 side wins. And if you need more info king cannot capture any pieces. Also it doesn't matter if it is check or not as long as you can take off the enemy king you can omit the check.

Did you realize you played Atomic chess, a chess variant with different rules?

So say the rules. Exploding of a king prevails over being in check of the other king.
