I mostly play chess because it is a fun way to forget reality for a while. It's kind of my painkiller, and like a painkiller too much of it can be detrimental, but in reasonable doses it is hugely beneficial.
When I play, I don't see my opponent as a competitor, but as a fellow human being with whom I have something in common; we both choose to spend some of the time we have to live doing something we enjoy, and that's the most important factor in the equation for me.
