Joining tournaments without the intention to actually play

Recently I've noticed many accounts joining arena tournaments in advance without the intention of actually playing when the tournament begins. As of this very moment for example, one can observe accounts that have joined tournaments that all begin at the same time ("Hourly Bullet Arena, Hourly SuperBlitz Arena, Hourly Blitz Arena etc...) There isn't any real intention to compete in all these events simultaneously. Needless to say, when you join a tournament, you do so because you are going to play in it. In short, it appears the join button is being abused.

I'm aware there is a "Game completion rate %" in each account's profile. I think this is a good stat to keep track of, and I know that warnings/timeouts are given to those who begin a game and then abort said game, and continue to do this in excess.

Suggestion: maybe track the % of time an account competes in a tournament that has been joined. Or maybe let it be clear to accounts that joining tournaments without the intention of playing is not a good idea and may result in X...Y...Z.

Thanks for reading and keep up the good work on a great site. 👍

oh I never actually knew what "Game completion rate" means until you stated it, thank you for the info!

I have to agree but I’d suggest not being able to join 2 tournaments simultaneously. You can’t tell much beforehand if a person has joined a single tournament for the given time period.

What would the purpose be to join a tournament without playing in it? It doesn't give players any tournament points or anything

I think it's a lack of time management. Some people join tournaments that start in 3 hours (for example) then they get busy when the tournament starts while forgetting to forfeit from the tournament

The warnings and temp bans don't really work. People still do it. And it seems like it is just as bad or worse than before.

But... why? Who cares if they join and don't play?

It happens to me sometimes, I'll join an Arena 3 hours before it starts and forget about it. No game starts if I'm not logged in, so who cares?

Now, if a game starts and they don't move and lose because they forgot and are AFK, that's a little different. But lichess already has timeouts and bans for players who do that a lot.

I say this very respectfully,I love your videos.

So they join some tourneys simultaneously and stay online, so they get paired everywhere and lose by default?

I know that FM jeffforever signs up for plenty of tournaments (quarantine leagues and other team battles) without actually playing but it doesn't seem to be an issue

I think it just gives an inaccurate number of who is participating in the tournament.

If anyone ever wanted to quote how many players they were competing against to earn the rank and the "top %31" they got that is shown on their profile, the number is skewed from the true value.

Although, I don't know for certain if the people who joined and don't match a game affects these numbers.. It sounds like they do.

Maybe there should be a limit to how far in advance you can 'pre-join' a tournament yet to start? maybe only 10 minutes in advance?

I know that the last time one of these tournaments came up, I had a lot of stuff going on that came up last second. I joined the tournament the day it was posted, but in between that time it was posted and the actual day of the tournament, a bunch of family stuff came up and I got distracted by that for a few days, and I forgot to play in the tournament. I feel bad about that, but I did have something distract me in the mean time. I know we have a tournament scheduled for tomorrow so I will try to remember to show up. I don't have anything going on right now so I don't have an excuse. However, last tournament I forgot while I was in the middle of handling something that came up unexpectedly. Hopefully, tomorrow I will be ready to go.
