I dislike this change, too. I'm sitting mostly in front of two huge monitors and most websites and applications force me on a UI optimized for four-inch-screens :(

This redesign is impractical for desktop users as it fails to utilize the available horizontal real estate on desktop monitors.
To optimize the available space and align with the new design's spirit, I propose an alternative redesign.

Description:
Implement a recursive hamburger menu to reduce clutter by hiding rarely accessed items within nested menus. Each hamburger menu will contain one item and another hamburger menu, creating a streamlined, hierarchical navigation structure.

Nice idea but I don't see how we could make that work on mobile.. unless.. could it wrap around like a helix?

Thank you for your feedback. Here is a mobile-friendly solution incorporating the "McDonald's" design:

From a new user (desktop) prospective the new changes makes it difficult to find "Report", "Challenge" & "Watch TV", which I think are the most important options from the list.

I imagine this was done with mobile users in mind. But I totally agree: for desktop users this is a step back. I don't like it.

Nah, you should instead make mobile users rotate their phones to look like a desktop experience.
