Repetition draw without repetition

It's repetition because the same position appeared three times.

It doesn't have to be in a row, not the same sequence of moves. Wondering why? Once, in a chess variant, the rule was the one you're expecting - three times in a row.

Some guy was trying to checkmate the other, but the other guy kept defending. So he kept on using different, but similar, sequences of moves to attack the enemy king.

They played 50-100 moves, before the defending side finally gave in and lost.

So, technically, games would go on forever. Or draw because of the 50-move rule (about captures and pawn moves). This could really just be shortened to three-fold repetition with the same situation repeating three times.
One would expect a chess player to familiarize themselves with the rules (is not chess based on rules?) before starting threads with "I thought." But sometimes that's too much to ask. A chess player stopping to think ! Unheard of ;-)
