Offline Blitz vs Online Blitz

Hi guys,

Had a blitz-tournament today and I didn't perform as well as I thought/hoped. I also lost many games because of time trouble in good positions.

Mostly I play 3 minute games on lichess and there are games when I am in time trouble, too. But most of the times when time trouble is on, I manage to get a position which is already decided for one side and your only chance is to trick your opponent.

But when I play offline blitz - 5 minute like today - I fail to get to 20 moves without having 1 minute time left... I just think too much in the opening and mid-game.

I just can't explain myself why most of the times I don't have any time-problems online while offline I'm struggling with my time-management. That's why I ask on my profile: "... why I play 5 minute games better on lichess than in reallife?"

Maybe because I feel like I would play a real tournament-game? Or do I have problems with 2D and 3D differences?

What's ur opinion on this theme? Do you also got this "problem" or do you perform the same - doesn't matter if offline or online?

Greetings! :)
There is no mouse-trickery offline, you cannot premove, have to press the clock and so on. It is more chess in my opinion.

Just practice more and it‘ll work as well.
I think the endphase is very different.

In reallife-chess, if there is a minute left on my clock, then I can at most manage to play approximately 20 nonsense-moves before the game ends.

Not so online, where there is premove. And moving a piece with my thumb on my tablet is a lot quicker than moving a real piece of wood and pressing a clock.

And knowing that, it influences the phase before timetrouble as well. I have to think quicker in the opening and in the middlegame, if I'm playing otb.
Some old-timer I know estimated that 5 min OTB is about equal to 3 min online. I dont think difference is that big maybe more like 4 but difference is real

Also assuming you learned chess online board vision is differerent and needs some time to getting used to
Lot of physical distractions in OTB blitz and the absence of pre-move obviously is a game changer. Some practical advice is to play moves closer to the clock
in any case your lichess rating looks coherent with your fide one...so probably it is just in your head
