Announcing Lichess Titled Arena 5

Not sure what you guys are saying, but making the time control 3+0, 5+0 or anything similar would only increase Magnus' chances of winning the tournament... Not sure you noticed, but he (unofficially) crossed the insane 3000 blitz fide rating some time ago.
I don't get the complaining about price distribution.
To me that ever growing price for first place adds a certain spice to the whole thing.
Magnus basically opened a virtual bank account and claims to have perfect security. He asks the world to pentest it. By time it might attract more and better "security experts" that try to claim the bugbounty. What in the world could be wrong with that. Hell, I love it!
- I'd like Lichess to create 1+0 Bullet Tournament which RANDOMLY picks up players.
Why? Cause then EVERYONE would be able to play against very strong players sometimes (currently only strong players are able to play against strong players cause they have similar tournament points, other players are not having enough points therefore are not able to play against them).

- I think many people would be inspired/excited to play in this tournament cause they know they have a chance to play against their favourite strong players.
Also, I think many would be inspired to stream such tournaments aswell.

- Resigning button might be turned off so that people can't cheat by losing on purpose all the time in order to play against their favourite players.
- If they constantly let their time out they'll be kicked out of tournament automatically after certain amount of such attemps…

- Tournament could be casual or rated
- Tournament could be once a month or few times a month

- I only hope strong players (2400+) would be willing to participate in such tournaments, if so, this would be really fun for many :)
Just imagine being able to play against Penguin or Magnus (potentially even few times per tournament sometimes) ;)

I like the prize distribution. It's like real world chess. Winner takes all. The best chess player gets paid very well. All the others get almost nothing.
The most realistic prize distribution would be: first place gets $3600. All the rest get $0.
#86, his tone was methaphorical, he meant that in the real world number one player makes much more money than number 2, let alone number 10 or 100.
In chess, same as in some other individual sports, the winner indeed takes it "all".
@PetarBosnjak, knowing how much they'll make everyone happy by allowing them playing against them at this certain day of month/week and this would still be like a regular tournament (fighting for first places) - the only difference would be "random pairing" with players instead of "pairing based on similar points"...
Strong players would still be in first places just like in every other tournament... but in these kinds of tournaments everyone would be able to play against anyone which is even more fun...

Now the question is how many 2400+ players actually enjoy making others happy like this at least once a month, if not few times per month...

And the only way to find out would be if Lichess actually makes such tournaments, otherwise we can just speculate and there's no point in doing that cause we can never know for 100% untill we actually experience such tournaments in reality...

If Lichess sees this doesn't work, it can just simply stop making such tournaments, but at least it gave it a shot...
People don't seem to realize that Magnus is helping out Lichess and making the tournament attract more and stronger players by returning the fund to #1 only. A big prize fund will continue to attract ever more and ever stronger players. The only way the prize fund grows at a reasonable pace is when Magnus wins and then returns those winnings to the #1 spot. If the prizes were distributed out then #2-#5 would take their winnings and cash out and the prize fund would be left to grow very slowly.

$3000 for a couple of hours of online bullet is already insane, and it's only getting bigger at this rate. This brings in more strong players which helps bring in more players in general which helps LiChess grow which could help them offer even bigger tournaments which helps bring in more strong players which... It also encourages players to avoid signing exclusivity contracts with sites like chess.com. I'm certain players like Nakamura would love to be playing in this.

It's good for chess, good for lichess, good for spectators. This is so much better overall for everybody than the lower places getting a bit of extra cash.
