Nice question. The piece that captured the ball to make the move stays on the square where the ball was before.

Chessarama its a software developed by brazilians. I took part of the beta test and its quite interesting.
That chess with 9x9 its quite interesting, but I've never seen an 9x9 board to give it a try

Fun fact: you can make an 8x8 board a 9x9 by playing on the intersections instead of the squares.

You get used to it quickly. Many strategy games are played on intersections: Xiangqi, Go, etc.
