Why did this game result in a tie.

I could of mated him, for fun to make things interesting. I tried to stalemate the game as my objective. The opponent ran out of time. I was not checked mated I had one move where I could of stalemated and the opponent ran out of time. The result was a draw.. I should of won due to him running out of time right? Why did this happen??!

Now here is the reason why it was drawn. He didnt mate you, but you didnt have enough pieces to mate him, so it is a draw by insufficient material.
