which is a 1 sentence description of what motivates many who do research in areas now called applied math is all about. (I dont like dividing math into areas but there is a general difference between people attracted to applied areas and very abstract areas. The latter could use the same quote without the bit about 'to perceive'.)
I also like G.C. Rotta's quotes. One of his, paraphrased from memory, that I like and agree with is
