no, not to own it. but it does take in revenue, it is a nonprofit. the not charging people to play gains loyalty over the other more scammy site (sorry any chess com fans). loyalty buys fans and fans give money. plus, if you want the cool looking wings you need to give....... (it is the only feature they charge for, but unlike chess com which charges you $100 a year for basic features it should already have, they charge you a minimum of $1 a month for a basic aesthetic feature, that's it). take a look at wikipedia, they are free with no ads, open source, and run off of donations with little to no benefits for patrons. they've survived long enough.
First of all, lichess is owned by Thibault. And his aim/dream was to create best learning and good environment for chess, where people can get the best things for learning chess. I myself consider lichess easier to use and handle than chess.com.
On the other hand, lichess has much friendly environment and protected too. Moderator are working all day to keep the best and safe content on lichess.
Its establishment and collaboration is much better than a high level companies.
Lichess ask for donations.
Thibault is working hard on his dream/aim. Every year lichess is updating and developing.
Yes, lichess not that developed but it will soon be best chess site.
I don't think lichess go to bankrupt on such careful environment.

"Hats off to" Thibault, moderators, and all friendly and open minded people on lichess. <3

P.S. : there are many things I may forgot to mention but we know lichess is best.

And don't compare lichess and chess.com unnecessarily on forums both are better at there end. And doing there best.

Lichess is a server and not a site.

a team of volunteers, and donations are enough to keep Lichess running. and even better, you can use the source code if you want to create your own platform

lichess.org/source#:~:text=Lichess%20is%20free%2Flibre%20open,every%20bit%20of%20source%20code.

Isn’t that wonderful?

Their phone interface is obsolete with a board that is too small and impossible to use correctly for fast time control. However, for a " supposedly #1 " site they could have made an improvement. but I guess the money has to go to fund Christian Pulisic's or Santa Claus' new (useless) interactive AI chess robot.

Lol
There are several good chess servers.

But Lichess seems wonderful, and provides everything I could hope for from a chess server. So, the goodness of other servers is nothing I need deny but also nothing I need to care about.

It's like when you marry a good woman. There are other good women in the world, too. But so what? One good one is a blessing and completely sufficient.
Chess.com is made popular because of promotion by youtubers. Lichess.org is popular because it is actually free (unlike chess.com) and has more features, a nicer community etc.

You make your choice.

I made mine.

I'm on the server as shown by this response.
