Hahaha :^}

I think people see the word Detention and get curious because, well you know, it's interesting. And they come and see it's full of nice people and discussion so they comment as well.

And the conflict between him and the teacher got worse as the spring weather warmed up and summer got nearer. By the middle of June, he had more detentions to be served than there were days of school to summer holiday.
Sounds like neither the parents/guardians, nor the school toke this issue seriously.
It sounds like an issue, where the teacher wasn't qualified to deal with this particular kind of student.

So for me, it is apparent, without knowing details, that neither school or parents/guardians did anything to help solve whatever underline issues there may be.

You said it was a kid, so I assume you are talking about a child or teenager?
Maybe not the teaches fault, and maybe not the kid's fault neither.
So, without knowing details, I will assume that the school/parents, one or both party, have acted insufficient, regarding how to solve the issues.

Scenario A: Kid is a trouble student, then the school/parents should have acted. Not leave it on the teacher/student to solve it, since detention wasn't going to help solve anything.

Scenario B: Kid is not a trouble student, but the teacher overreacted. Still school/parents should have acted.

Scenario C/D/E/Ect: If a recurring issue, where the teacher/students can't resolve it, the school/parents/guardians must take over and find a solution.
