Today I faced a time out. I assume it was because I aborted a game. Usually I play all my games. And I am surprised this happened. Furthermore, I was not actively aborting the game but accidentally hit the back button on my gaming mouse. I immediately returned to the game, but but then it was already to late, even though my timer should not have run out in this time. Is this intentional or a bug?

I can see two aborted games just among your latest three, 18 minutes apart. And another just a bit further in the history. And one weird resignation after two moves.

You should play all of them. Sure, mistakes, misclicks or vis maior can happen occasionally. But it should be rare.
The early resignation was in a casual game so it might not count, not sure (you're not required to try to win casual games after all). There was a loss by leaving the game a week and a half ago (not sure if it counts here, probably depends on the exact number of games between then and now); there could have been more abortions I guess, aborted games are deleted after a while so they won't be visible in your game history.
The loss by leaving the game was a disconnection. It happens from time to time. As you can see in my statistics this happens very rarely.
I also abort games from time to time, as i hit new oppenent although i am not in the mood to play a new game. But the time out has never occured before. Usually one can also abort several games in a row. And no time out does occur. From my personal experience i should be in the tolerance.
As a matter of fact the time out occured in the game against director 12. I tried to reproduce it with the second aborted game, but this time there was no time out. I aborted it classicaly by clicking on the cross.
Note that i dind not abort the game against director12 manually. Instead i accidentally clicked back on my browser (there is a special button on my mouse) and when i came back with forward arrow in my browser the game was already aborted and I had a time out.
If you frequently abort games, timeouts will happen. Don't do it.
