This used to be universally true. Now society has changed, and gender pronouns are politicized. Following the old convention indicates your conservative stance on a number of issues.

To say that usage of an article in general is indicative of the persuasion of an individual's specific alignment is like saying that the offspring of two related equines producing infertile offspring can only be described in a nebulous sense, rather than referring to it in a practical way: "that's a mule, he looks docile".
