Sometimes opponents use giving extra time as a method a taunting. In general if I'm playing a particular time control, it's because I want to play that time control, not an ad hoc one depending on the whim of my opponent. It would be nice if one could disable the ability of the opponent to give extra time in the same way one can disable the ability of the opponent to ask for takebacks.

I agree. The few times that someone gives me more time is to taunt is because has a mate in one or like this...

No, I add extra time to my opponents clock when they are losing and leave. I do this so they cannot play another game till I get bored or they come back and resign. I also say gg no matter what as well. I'll usually resign if I see my opponent has a checkmating sequence.

If they leave you can claim a victory immediately though? Seems like a pretty spiteful strategy that wastes time for both players

Yea my opponents do waste my time for leaving the game before finished... Then I have to sit there for 2 minutes to claim victory. Press the resign button and you won't have to wait 10 minutes to play another game. It's just an eye for an eye. And if your opponent leaves because they are a sore loser then it's up to you and only you to teach them how to press resign.

In my experience lichess recognizes pretty much immediately that an opponent has left, so I don't know what you mean about waiting 2 minutes. If they haven't actually left the game, then it's it their right to use whatever time they have left to make any move. Using giving extra time as a punitive measure to waste additional time for both you and your opponent seems pretty ill-thought-out. You're wasting more of your own time with that as well.

Hmm learningchess that's a novel tactic for dealing with saw losers, but not really its intended function, and not a good arguement as to why someone shouldn't be allowed an opt out for it's intended use.
Your tactic isn't fullproof either as it wastes your own time, and there is the opposite scnario where cheaters with a lot of time left on their clock who leave the game by going on another tab to let their time run out to try and force you to accept draw, also just being a saw loser.
Intellectually competitive forums like this always suffer from toxic egos, tools to filter them out will never work 100% but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be tried.
I actually like always giving takebacks and giving time to work through an interesting endgame that would have otherwise been lost, I've lost games by giving time or take backs but always felt like I learned more.
Just my two cents.

And my ping averages around 600ms while playing. I guess that's why it takes sooo long lol. I dunno.

Here's what happens, Somehow a weaker opponent blunders into a mate in 3 so he leaves. I add time to give him a chance to finish the game out while I sit and jam to my music. And not to mention it's my time anyways? To me it seems like you all are the kind of player that leaves when losing to upset your opponent or you just don't have enough respect for the game to finish it out. I could be wrong because I didn't waste my time to check if that was a true statement or not. I just assuming because why would anyone scold someone who's getting justice the only way you can in that situation without damage.
