How can I prevent following threads automatically?

I only want to receive notifications when I deliberately click on "follow/sub" - I dont want to get informed about news of any thread I posted a comment in, I cannot find anything in the settings in the profile
I like how it's currently set because it will maximize participation and the social aspect of the Lichess.org community.

That said, you can unsubscribe from any thread that you post in.

Lastly, don't be surprised to see Lichess implement your suggestion with a "Turn off auto-subscribe" option in the settings.

(I'm not saying they will or they wont, but they frequently update and improve the site on a regular basis if people have good ideas that can be implemented.)
How is it forced?

There are many reasons behind why many people find themselves addicted to Twitter.
Reasons that function way beyond levels that people are consciously aware of.

That doesn't mean that Twitter is 'forcing' anyone to engage.
They just make it extremely easy to engage in case someone chooses to do so.

It's definitely better for the community as-is because they've weighed the amount of people that say, "Ack! These updates in these threads and having to unsubscribe them if I don't want to see them any more is the WORST!" versus the amount of people that say, "Oh yeah! I forgot all about that thread. It was a good one! Let me see what someone updated it with."

From there, friendships are forged and the community is strengthened.

It makes good sense.

“This never leads to something good.”

Well! Your pessimism exceeds my own — a feat I didn’t think possible. 🙇 Congratulations, for what that’s worth. ... (Admittedly, I’ve taken part in some fairly unfruitful exchanges. But “never” is still too strong a word, as I have also made friends this way.)

The ability to choose which types of activities you are notified of, while setting up your account, would certainly be welcome — and is already commonplace in other internet platforms, such as YouTube. That said, my understanding is it’s difficult to code; and you must admit the current system makes a good default. (What else should your news feed be for, if not threads you’ve participated in?) I am sure more options will appear in time. 🙂
why stop at notifications. to be safe. avoid the social interaction of posting in a thread, specially if you care so little about it that you do not want to be notified about it. It seems that you might be wanting the freedom to tango. Guess what, you already have it, as post #2, indicated. once a thread is posted in, it becomes subscribed, but then, notice the eye prefix button on top right of reply box. It says unsubscribe. I assume it works. Maybe it does not, and hence you this thread?
