Hi there,
Thousands of hours are lost everyday by players who chase after rating points and end up being upset at themselves ;)
I would love to see a "block ratings" feature where I could just turn them off and focus on having fun or improving and playing quality games instead of peak ratings or round numbers.
Maybe having a feature to block my own rating, and another one to block opponents ratings.
It would be super helpful for players who getted put off their game by opponents ratings (either by getting intimidated by a high rating or underestimating a lower rated player).
And would make for some fun experiments - how much would people actually improve (rating wise) if they couldn't see the metric?
I'm curious, developers out there, is this a very difficult feature to implement?
Thanks for your time!
Jeff

That's called zen mode, press z during a game to activate it

Well, it's similar but no... zen mode hides a numbers of things (including the rating, yes) but only during the course of the game.
My idea would be that once you deactivate the display of your rating in your setting, you would simple have no idea what it is, you couldn't access your graphs, it wouldn't come up on the analyis board, etc. Obviously this would not impact your opponents, who would continue to see your rating normally.

Stick black tape on the area where the ratings show up.

@PranavBobbySekhar
Yep, make sure it's flex tape so it never comes off!
Stick it on to your computer and make it completely waterproof! And the inside is completely dry!

Yeah, good point.
Just to be clear, I think ratings are very important for any chess site to function, and I want to keep being able to play opponents my strength or slightly stronger, the best way to have fun/improve.
I just think that being able to not see them would be hugely beneficial to a wide array of players....

i guess i don't get it.. i can see my rating and my opponents but i don't feel it has any impact on my play... the benefits of seeing your opponents rating especially during arena tournaments is you can gauge when you can berserk and when you probably shouldn't.. I realize there are people that see someones rating and decide their fate before move one .. maybe such players could chime in as to why they feel that way its a neat psychological issue

Hey @Darksouls, thanks for your contribution to the thread. Kudos to you for not letting rating impact your play at all. And I agree that ratings are important for arena style tournaments, so I guess this feature wouldn't be for you.
Personally, I have played hundreds of games just trying to "get even for the day", "reach 2100", "beat my peak", "get back to xxxx" etc. And I don't even think I'm extremely rating oriented compared to the norm.
I don't consider those good reasons to play chess. The feature that I suggest would have saved me hours of my life, and improved the quality of my experience on lichess, and I'm sure it would help hundreds of adult improvers out there.

@lookingforyuri i get having goals but being rating-centric as you have pointed out is bad for your health/play... i used to be like that but now i focus on just enjoying the game.. it does suck coming close to 2200 in blitz and then just fall all the way back down and spend another week/month getting back to where you were but just remember the wins will come and what good is it to get to 2200 if you/i can't maintain it... i think taking risks in a game is good for the player even if it doesn't pan out.. nothing i cant stand more is stale/dry play especially when i'm the one making it that way.. but maybe instead of a daily goal try weekly/monthly... for me right now if i can stay within 2125-2180 every week i'm doing okay.. maybe not improving as fast as i like and some games feel like i forgot how to play but eventually my norm will be 2200-2250... but for right now i'm enjoying the game at my level with all the inconsistencies
