Who invented this beautiful game Chess?

Hi, I'm John Chess, the inventor of chess, and are you sick of sucking at chess? Well lucky for you, I have invented a*******!
There was that (uncheckered) 8×8 board around used for several games So if you come up with the idea to stage a battle why not try the given and popular board, or it may have been transfered there, too.

The pawn moving straight, taking diagonally may be borrowed from an older racing game played on the 8×8.

To form armies of several divisions and give to these different geometric directions is beautiful but not all out of the ordinary. Genius or not is the combination of them. Chess as it is is one result of play. There are hundreds, if not thousands of chess-like games, I mean traditional local variations recorded, and it need not be that any single one was first. They were all genius enough to make it into play, discarded versions on their trail.

The idea to build a game of complementary pieces is so inviting to experimentation that the first players hardly would have believed their sketch was final. They rather knew they were part of a great riddle with an unknown amount of non-trivial solutions.

Chess is trivially non-trivial among them, still it is part of something greater than just chess, that is the chess family of games.
